Linux System Administrator at SMHI

Do you want to manage and develop the Linux platform that supports SMHI's critical systems? With us, you will have a broad and meaningful assignment alongside competent colleagues – and a great opportunity to influence how we automate and drive our environment forward.

About the IT Department

We achieve a well-functioning IT operation by providing user-friendly, cost-effective, and purpose-oriented IT services and tools. The IT department consists of about 130 people distributed across four units: Architecture, Digital Workplace, System Development, and IT Production. The IT Production unit plays a central role in shaping and providing the technical foundation for SMHI's IT environment.

About the Position

You will be part of the Infrastructure Server group within the IT Production unit, responsible for operating systems on servers and clients, automation, databases, and identity and access management. Together with competent colleagues, you will manage and develop our Linux client and server platform (currently Red Hat Enterprise Linux), an important part of our complex and exciting IT environment. We actively work on automating our platform to free up time, increase efficiency, and create redundancy. The group is also responsible for remote desktop, print server, mail gateway, and FTP services.

You will provide office-based support for the Linux environment, including clients, and participate in a rotating support week during the day, approximately every five weeks. You will closely collaborate with other groups within IT Production, particularly the sister group Infrastructure Base, maintain frequent dialogue with users and development operations, and contribute to ongoing technology shifts such as network segmentation and containerization. Together with your closest colleagues, you will plan, prioritize, and execute the work, becoming part of a tight-knit and competent team that supports each other to drive continuous improvements.

If you have skills and interests in other technology areas within IT infrastructure, there are good opportunities to contribute and develop within the unit.

About You

We are looking for someone with a post-secondary IT education of at least two years or equivalent experience. You express yourself well in Swedish and English, both spoken and written, and have good knowledge of IT infrastructure and Linux – both server and client. You have at least two years of system administrative experience in infrastructure and Linux, both server and client in a larger environment.

Highly Desirable

  • Education or equivalent experience and/or certifications in the Linux technology area, preferably RHEL.
  • In-depth experience with Linux/RHEL (server/client), including hardware installation, platform responsibility/management, and strategic work with a holistic view of IT infrastructure.
  • Experience with support tools such as Puppet (OpenVox), Foreman, and integration with virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware vSphere).
  • Automation using tools like AWX/Ansible.

Desirable

  • Specialization in IT infrastructure, such as automation, networking, and/or container technology.
  • Knowledge in IT security.
  • Experience in environments designed to protect classified information.
  • Version control (e.g., GitLab).
  • Scripting/programming (e.g., Python).

Your personal qualities and abilities are important for thriving and succeeding in this role. We are looking for someone with strong self-drive and perseverance; you remain motivated and effective when obstacles arise, and you have a strong sense of loyalty to the mission and your colleagues. You are accustomed to taking responsibility, even though working closely with your colleagues entails a significant personal responsibility for managing and maintaining the areas you are responsible for.

You drive your own personal development at work and are motivated by working with qualified colleagues in an exciting environment. You have a good sense of service and are responsive to user requests without compromising on accuracy and efficiency. You have a developed security awareness based on your area of expertise.
